Audiology in South Africa

Dear members
I have recently joined the Audiology faculty at University of Cape Town,
Medical School, in South Africa as Assistant Professor.

UCT offers a four year undergraduate degree in Speech and Audiology,
culminating in registration with the South African Medical and Dental Council
as both or either Speech Therapist/Audiologist.

We have just this year started a Masters Program. I shall be coordinating
it for the rest of the year.

The university has limited access to texts, reference material and journals in
audiology. The major source of this problem is of course funding. I want to
make an urgent appeal to anyone who would be prepared to sponsor us
journals/books in audiology. Students need access to current information in
hearing to engage in dynamic learning. Sadly, this is lacking.

I plan to introduce the continuing education units, public awareness
campaigns, workshops, seminars, annual conventions, and momentum for
scientific research nationally. Some of the bridges are now being built, for
instance, the first Audiology in Action Association (similar to AAA) has been
formed in Johanesburg. Such a branch has been initiated in Cape Town. I have
been elected as Treasurer. So, I believe that many changes are in the works.

We also need interested international authorities to lead workshops and
seminars on a regular basis. I am requesting ideas and assistance from the
members of bionet.audiology.

Thanking you.
Sharmala Naidoo
