I wish to start my own audiology/hearing aid dispensing practice in
southeastern Michigan, USA. My market research shows good potential and
I have verbal assurances of referrals from several local physicians and
agencies. I have generated significant business "good will" by virtue of
my previous work and thus have a following of clients who would like to
use my services. PROBLEM: The major local HMOs are unwilling to
recognize new providers at present. QUESTION: Are there any
audiologists among you who have dealt with such an obstacle? I question
the wisdom of beginning a private practice without HMO, PPO etc. provider
status. I would appreciate your insights.
Perhaps others would like to expand upon this issue and begin a
discussion on managed care as pertains to audiology.
