Audiology Positions - Hearing disability in Aboriginal children
Efforts over the past five years (Menzies School of Health Research,
Darwin, Australia) have been guided by studies that demonstrated in
Northern Territory Aboriginal communities the very early onset of otitis
media in Aboriginal children. Within 30 days of birth 60% of infants have
otitis media, and by 60 days, nearly 100% are affected. Associated
hearing loss from this very young age places infants and children at very
high risk for auditory disorders. Translating the results of this early
research into improved clinical outcomes for Indigenous Australians is now
the challenge.
In order to apply this and other research to improved clinical outcomes, I
have left the Menzies School of Health Research as Head of the Ear Health
and Education Unit and have joined AUSTRALIAN HEARING as District Manager
in Darwin. AUSTRALIAN HEARING is a government agency providing Australians,
both adults and children, with the highest quality hearing care including
assessments, FM hearing aids, conventional and digital hearing aids. Its
research arm, National Acoustics Laboratory (NAL) is recognized around the
world for its research in psychoacoustics and hearing aids. Australia is
also a world leader in cochlear implant technology.
Audiology students (practicum or CFY) who would be interested in
experiencing a bit of "Crocodile Dundee", flying in small aircraft to rural
and remote areas of the outback, providing hearing services to Aboriginal
