Basically, Solaris on Intel (on proper Intel hardware) runs like a
dream. It works great, is a doddle to manage, integrates seamlessly,
and I would highly recommend it.
We run BLAST on quad-processor Dells running Solaris 7. You have to be
reasonably careful in your choice of hardware: random cheap PCs from
the corner shop are unlikely to work well, but servers from the major
manufacturers stand a pretty good chance of working.
