         Management, Assessment, and Planning System

On behalf of ICE, we are pleased to announce that ICE MAPS, an
interactive information query system for California, is now
on-line for your use at http://ice.ucdavis.edu/ice_maps/

ICE MAPS allows the user to interactively query information
about the natural resources of California. This information
is organized in the GIS system and databases which have been
assembled and are continually being expanded here at ICE. A
central goal is to provide information useful for resource
assessment and conservation planning by both private
organizations and public agencies. We believe ICE MAPS will
be useful to conservationists, land use planners, applied
ecologists, governmental agency biologists and administrators,
and private citizens interested in natural resource issues.

One of the primary outputs of the on-line system is a
customized map. The user may define an arbitrary geographical
region of rectangular shape -- by clicking the mouse on a
selectable map or entering values in coordinate entry boxes --
or choose a pre-defined region from one of a number of lists
of such regions. The user may then iteratively refine the
boundaries of the geographical region of interest. We refer
to this process as "navigation". A second step in using ICE
MAPS is "data retrieval", which expands the set of data layers
available for inclusion in the final output map. Additional
output includes hyper-links to sources of information related
to the user's query. Plans for future enhancements call for
tabular output.

ICE MAPS is easily expanded: All details about pre-defined
regions, available GIS data layers, links to other sources,
and tabular output options are stored in external tables in a
simple, plain-text format. These tables are read by the Web
CGI script and are used to build and configure the user
interface.
