Description:
Accessing genes and genomes with Ensembl
Ensembl is a joint project between EMBL - EBI and the Sanger Institute
to develop a software system which produces and maintains automatic
annotation on eukaryotic genomes. Ensembl is primarily funded by the
Wellcome Trust. Access to all the data produced by the project, and to
the software used to analyse and present it, is provided free and
without constraints.
This two day course will initially cover the basics of the Ensembl Human
Genome Annotation Browser and will move on to data mining within its
genomic databases. The data mining system EnsMart will be covered in
depth, and practical exercises will assist the researcher in learning to
get the best out of the data available. Comparative cross species
analysis will be included in the course, and examples using the data
available in the genomes of higher eukaryotes explained.
PLEASE NOTE: that the course focuses primarily on the Human genome and
touches on some other vertebrate genomes.
Ensembl only holds metazoan genomes.
The course starts with a brief introduction to the website, then goes
beyond that to go 'under the hood' explaining how to maximise the use of
Ensembl according to your research needs. We try to provide enough
information to help you to assess whether they should 'believe' a gene
structure from the Ensembl database and how to assess how good it is.
The course will be taught by members of the Ensembl team heavily
involved with user queries, thus the course has been developed to
explain the finer points of the Ensembl system and help the researcher
get the most out of the system and apply it to their own projects.
Pre-Requisites: Course participants will be expected to be familiar with
using an Internet Browser.
