The new Scottish Microbiology Society newsletter is available at the
SMS website at http://www.strath.ac.uk/Departments/BioSci/Sms1.htm
This may also be of interest to those who are attending the next SGM
conference in Edinburgh in April or any microbiologist wishing to join
the Scottish Microbiology Society.
The Society for General Microbiology will be holding a meeting at
Edinburgh University from to 13th to 16th April 1999. Rather than
compete at what will be a busy time for a large number of our members we
have decided to hold an industrial tour in and around Edinburgh the day
before the SGM meeting on Monday 12th April and enable some of our
members to attend both events. The tour will meet at Waverley Station in
Edinburgh (timetable information www.railtrack.co.uk/travel/ at 10am
prompt. We will then proceed to Roslin Midlothian where the party will
divide into two groups of 20 to see either the Roslin Institute
(www.ri.bbsrc.ac.uk) or PPL Therapeutics in Midlothian for a tour of
their facility (www.ppl-therapeutics.com). This will be followed by
lunch at The Physician & Firkin (58 Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh, EH10 5AD,
www.firkins.co.uk), a Firkin Brewery Pub near the Commonwealth Pool in
Edinburgh and then on by coach to the Scottish Courage Brewery and
Technical Centre for an afternoon visit starting at approximately
2.30pm. Members can then catch a return trip by coach to Waverley
Station and city centre pubs.
The tour is unfortunately limited to 40 members and we will have to
impose a small fee of approximately £5 to cover the coach travel. This
will be a highly enjoyable and informative day. More details can be
found on the website. An application form is available on the newsletter
which is being posted out today.
If you are interested in the day out or becoming a member of the
Scottish Microbiology Society (membership costs only 3 pounds student
and 6 pounds professional for a year) please E mail
s.a.q.burton at strath.ac.uk ASAP
