Postdoctoral Research Opportunities (Planetary Protection Technologies):
Immediate openings exist for postdoctoral researchers with backgrounds in
microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Some of the current
thrusts in JPL, NASA are on novel approaches to:
v Develop new and advanced bioassay techniques and procedures that are more
sensitive and require less time to complete than the present NASA approved
methods for Planetary Protection.
v Develop, and implement capabilities to assay viable, non-viable whole
cells, & bio-remnants that will be compatible with life detection science
experiments.
v Develop advanced cleaning and sterilization techniques that are
compatible with sensitive hardware and satisfy needs of life detection
science.
v Meet planetary protection and scientific requirements for the Mars Sample
Return mission series.
JPL is a highly interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment
requiring energetic students capable of interacting with researchers from
many research groups. Students and postdoctoral researchers with a desire
to do creative work in areas being pursued by the institute are encouraged
to apply. The applicant should be a US citizen or a US permanent resident.
Desirable applicants should have a recent Ph.D. (graduated on or after
1995) with a broad background and extensive knowledge in the following
areas: Microbiology, molecular biology, or related disciplines.
1. Various microscopy techniques (Epifluorescence, SEM and TEM).
2. PCR techniques, nucleic acid purification, general molecular
diagnostics, in situ hybridization etc.
3. Familiarity with the development and implementation of Quality control
and Quality assurance procedures.
4. Prior experience in the characterization of culturable and
non-culturable microflora.
5. General knowledge in chemical and biochemical analytical techniques.
6. Previous experience with general microbiology techniques and knowledge
in the standard techniques of general microbiology.
