Industry Funded Studentship
-
Biofilm Adhesion and Effect on Corrosion of Stainless Steels

Applications are invited for a 1 year, M Phil. Industrial studentship,
sponsored by AVESTA Sheffield, a leading stainless steel manufacturer. The
stipend will be the same as current Research Council grants. Candidates
should possess an honours degree (2:1 minimum) in any physical or
biological science. Some knowledge of biofilms, marine microbiology,
microscopy or electrochemistry would be useful.
Biofilm formation on stainless steels when exposed to seawater is a major
issue when the effects on the subsequent corrosion processes is considered.
This aim of this study is to characterise the biofilm formed on stainless
steels under controlled hydrodynamic conditions and correlate this to the
effect on the electrochemical response of the surface. The adhesion of the
biofilm is also under consideration. This well-funded study is
experimentally-based and will require a substantial amount of interaction
between both Universities and the sponsoring company. The project will
start in January 2000. The student will gain experience in a variety of
microscopical techniques and electrochemistry. Training will be provided
where necessary. There is the possibility of continuation of the project
for a PhD.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to either Dr Jeremy Thomason,
Department of Marine Sciences and Coastal Management, University of
Newcastle (Tel. 0191 222 8946; e-mail j.c.thomason at .ncl.ac.uk) or Dr Anne
Neville, Department of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Heriot-Watt
University, Edinburgh (Tel. 0131 449 5111 EXT 4365, e mail
a.neville at hw.ac.uk).
Applicants should send a detailed CV and covering letter, together with the
names, and postal and e-mail addresses of two referees to Dr J Thomason,
Department of Marine Sciences and Coastal Management, University of
Newcastle, Newcastle NE1 7RU The closing date for applications is 19th
November 1999.
