Microbial biofilms in the kitchen

Dear Joe,
Welcome to the biofilm field. There is considerable literature on biofilms
and their resistance to various disinfectants and antibiotics. Generally
speaking, biofilm bacteria are likely going to have similar strategies for
resistance whether they are growing in the kitchen, on a urinary catheter,
or an oil pipeline.
For literature, I would recommend that you get on my web site (address is
posted at the end of this message). I have installed several links which
can be quite helpful. One is to Grateful Med (a literature search engine
operated by the US National Library of Medicine). You can easily do online
literature searches through it. Several other links will take you to
various biofilm web sites. Among others, I would recommend investigating
the Biofilm Club which is based in the UK. Peter Gilbert (Manchester),
Hilary Lappin-Scott (Exeter), Dave Stickler and Julian Wimpenny (Cardiff),
Ian Sutherland (Edinburgh), and a number of other members are "world class"
biofilm experts.
Finally, I would recommend that you consider attending Biofilms 2000 to be
held in Big Sky Montana (USA) in July. The Center for Biofilm Engineering
link on my webpage will have information on it.
Good luck,
Bob McLean
