biofilms by digital image analysis. International Microbiology. 2:241-250.
This is an article that one of my students, Karthi, published and that
shows how bacteria in biofilm communities sometimes protect one another
from antimicrobial agents by degrading them and thus lowering their
concentration within the microenvironment. In this case it was protection
from benzoic acid, but the principle might also apply to household
disinfectants if microbes are capable of chemically modifying or degrading
them.
