Type IV pili and biofilms

Hi,

Does anyone know of any information that may relate the
expression of type IV pili on bacterial surfaces to biofilm
development? I know of some work by O’toole, which
describes a possible relationship between the expression of
pili and the ability to integrate into biofilms. More
importantly would such an ability to integrate into single
species biofilms also apply to multiple species?

Thanks,
Alex Rickard
