Have you thought of phototrophic bacteria?
The inside looks like sulfur granules to me. If it turns the pond water
pink, there must be many in the open water column. So they ought to be
photosynthetic primary producers.
Have a look in "The Prokaryotes" for pictures of phototrophic bacteria.
