Dear Dr. Shapiro:
Check out these references, I think they might help.
Bayston R, Rodgers J. Production of extra-cellular slime by
Staphylococcus epidermidis during stationary phase of growth: its
association with adherence to implantable devices. J of Clin
Pathol. 1990. 43:866-869.
Whiteman P. The quantitative measurement of alcian blue -
glycosaminoglycan complexes. Biochem J. 1973. 131: 343-50.
Both of these use an alcian blue staining method to estimate EPS. Hope
they help.
Good Luck,

Subject: Biofilm staining
Dear Colleagues;
I remember reading a while back that people have quantified biofilms
in glass or plastic vessels by first aspirating the planktonic cells, then
staining the adherent biofilm cells with a dye, and then measuring the
amount of dye, either as a thin film or following solubilisation. However,
I have been unable to locate any such references. If anyone is aware of
such references, would you be kind enough to contact me _directly_ at
toukie at zui.unizh.ch
with a list of relevant citations?
Thanks in advance to all responders,
S. Shapiro
