POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS AVAILABLE March, 2001

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to request your help in identifying outstanding
candidates to fill several postdoctoral positions in my laboratory at
Weill Medical College of Cornell University (New York City).

Positions are available to study non-ribosomal peptide synthetases
and polyketide synthases that assemble peptide and polyketide
compounds of medical interest. Non-ribosomally synthesized peptides
and polyketides display a wide range of structural and functional
diversity. On the one hand, the pharmacological properties of some
of these compounds (antitumor, immunosuppressive, antiviral,
antimicrobial, and antiparasitic activities) make them an invaluable
pharmacopoeia to combat disease. On the other hand, many of these
compounds function as virulence factors in pathogenic microorganisms,
and therefore their assembly pathways are targets for therapeutic
intervention. The incumbents will adopt interdisciplinary approaches
to decipher the molecular logic of biosynthesis, structure, function,
and mode of action of compounds from Mycobacterium spp. and
Pseudomonas spp. Applicants should have a doctoral degree in
chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline.

Positions are also available to study gene expression of Pseudomonas
aeruginosa (Pa). Chronic infection of the lungs by this
opportunistic pathogen is the main cause of morbidity and mortality
in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Key to Pa pathogenicity is
the control of expression of its 5,570 open reading frames. The
incumbents will work to generate and analyze gene expression profiles
of Pa in the context of conditions relevant to CF. A genomic
approach based on DNA-microarrays will be used to study expression
profiles associated with planktonic (free-floating) and biofilm forms
of Pa. Of particular interest will be the study of expression
changes in Pa induced by conditions encountered in CF patients and
upon interaction of Pa with cells of the host immune system.
Candidates should have a doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular
genetics, or a related discipline.

Incumbents will have the opportunity to work in a stimulating
scientific environment due to our location. Located in the immediate
area and affiliated with the Medical College are The Rockefeller
University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute, and The Hospital for
Special Surgery. This proximity provides excellent opportunities for
interacting with colleagues in the New York scientific community.
Postdoctoral fellows will enjoy the benefits of subsidized Cornell
housing in residential neighborhoods of the Upper East Side of
Manhattan, within walking distance of the College. Interested
candidates should send their curriculum vitae and the names of three
references to the address below.

I thank you in advance for your help.

Yours sincerely,
