We have a Ph.D. position available at the
Institute of Water Quality Control and Waste Management
Technical University of Munich
Am Coulombwall
85748 Garching
Germany,
within an international research project dealing with Multifunctional
barriers for the treatment of contaminated groundwater.
Task Description

This study is a part of an international research project financially
supported by the European Comission, dealing with bioremediation of
groundwater contaminated with complex mixtures of different
pollutants. The project foresees the selective enrichment of specifically
designed biofilm communities, the characterisation of the microbial biofilm
populations and eventually the development from lab scale to pilot scale of
the system.

Research Program

The research program involves the selection of microbial populations in
biofilms suitable for the multibarrier technology and the optimization of
these communities by adequate supplementing with growth-promoting
additives. An important aspect of this project is the in situ
characterization of the microbial communities and their population
dynamics. For this purpose microscopic techniques such as confocal
laser-scanning microscopy (CLSM) in combination with fluorescent markers
(e.g. reporter proteins and oligonucleotide probes) will be optimized and
applied. Further, CLSM will be used to microscopically describe the
structure and architecture of multibarrier biofilms.

Experience with molecular biology methods is a definite bonus.
