The Center for Biofilm Engineering

-Biofilm structure and function research group-

Montana State University

Bozeman, MT, U.S.A

Overview

The goal of the summer school is to provide the participants with the
fundamental knowledge needed to understand biofilm process and fundamental
techniques needed in biofilm research. The summer school is composed of
three workshops:

Biofilm Structure Quantification and Image Analysis

July 24 - 25, 2006

The details of the workshops are given on their respective web pages.

The summer school is offered by the Biofilm Structure and Function Research
Group at the Center for Biofilm Engineering, Montana State University as an
extension of the summer workshops we have been offering for 5 years. Members
of this group are experienced biofilm researchers. For a detailed
description of our research, please see http://www.erc.montana.edu/
<http://www.erc.montana.edu/> . The summer workshops we were offering for
five consecutive years were all well attended by a variety of participants
from industry and academia. The workshops have been evaluated as "a must" by
the participants and many of them have developed their own biofilm research
laboratories after completing the workshops. Following the suggestions of
the past years' participants, we are consolidating the workshops and
offering them in sequence as a Summer School.

The Summer School is a sequence of three workshops introducing the
participants to the basic principles of biofilm processes and continuing to
more advanced topics on evaluating biofilm activity using microsensors and
evaluating biofilm structure using various types of microscopy and image
analysis. As a part of the workshop materials, the participants will receive
copies of selected chapters from the text book, Fundamentals of Biofilm
Research, written by the workshop organizers and covering the topics
discussed during the summer school.

For detailed agenda, lectures, the lab sessions, and instructors, please
visit each workshop's web page. The activities include 9 days of lectures
and lab sessions, a one-day field trip to Yellowstone National Park (August
2, 2006) and a farewell dinner (August 4, 2006).

A limited number of fellowships are available for qualified graduate
students.

Location

The summer school will be held at the Center for Biofilm Engineering at
Montana State University. The campus is located at the center of the Bozeman
area, in the beautiful Gallatin Valley, nestled in the Northern Rocky
Mountains. Directions and a map of the area will be sent to the registered
participants with the registration materials.

Accommodations

Participants are encouraged to stay at one of the following hotels due to
their proximity to the Montana State University campus.

Best Western - City Center Motel, 507 W. Main St., Bozeman, MT (406)
587-3158

Lewis and Clark Motel of Bozeman, 824 W Main St, Bozeman, MT (406)
586-3341

Both motels are in the walking distance to Montana State University. Based
on the opinions of the participants of our previous workshops, Best Western
offers better quality and service.

Fee and registration

The cost of the summer school is $ 4500, which includes the workshop
materials, continental breakfast each morning, coffee during breaks, and a
farewell dinner. The fee may be paid by check, money order, credit card or
purchase order (payable to Center for Biofilm Engineering). To register
please first contact us, and then complete the attached registration form,
and return it with the fee to Haluk Beyenal.

Because of space limitations, the number of participants is limited, and
reservations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
Therefore, pre-registration is necessary. To pre-register, please call or
e-mail Haluk Beyenal (contact information is given below). Once
pre-registered, you will receive a confirmation number. No payments will be
accepted without a confirmation number! The payment must be received by
June 1, 2006.

Cancellation

The organizers reserve the right to cancel the workshop because of
insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If the workshop
is cancelled, the organizers will refund all registration fees, but can not

including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines or travel
agencies.

Refunds will be made for cancellations received in writing by June 1, 2006.
The participant will be charged a $50 administrative fee if he/she cancels
by June 1, 2006. After that, there will be no refunds, and the participant
or the organization will be held responsible for the fee. Anyone who is
registered but cannot attend may send a substitute.
