A public memorial service for Kevin Van Doren will be
held on Mon., Oct. 23 at 4 PM in Hendricks Chapel on the
Syracuse University campus. Anyone wanting more information
about this service should contact Eleanor Maine
(emmaine at mailbox.syr.edu).
Jean Van Doren has now been out of a wheelchair for
about two weeks and has been getting around with a cane. She
will not need physical therapy for her pelvis but she is getting
physical therapy for her arm.
Several people have contacted Eleanor Maine and me
about making contributions to the Van Doren family and some
have already sent money, for which Jean is very grateful. Nick
Garigliano, a close friend of Jean's, is collecting contributions to
cover the cost of health insurance for Jean and her daughters,
($380 per month). Nick expects that Jean will need this
assistance for 9-12 months until she completes her master's
degree and gets a job. He is trying to get 38 people to commit
to sending $10 per month but he will accept contributions of any
amount including one-time contributions. Checks should be
made out to St. Andrew the Apostle Church (Jean's parish) and
sent to Nick Garigliano, B-11 #1, Slocum Heights, Syracuse, NY
13210. Because the contributions will be processed through St.
Andrew's they are tax-deductible. Eleanor and I will vouch for
Nick's integrity and trustworthiness. His email address is
gariglia at synapse.bms.com if anyone has any questions.
On behalf of Jean, Corie, and Meredith, I would like to
thank all of the members of the C. elegans community who have sent
letters and money. Jean is obviously quite overwhelmed with her
situation and has not been able to reply to most people who have
written to her but she appreciates all of the support that she
has received. Thanks.
