homologs, paralogs, orthologs

Homologs are simply sequences related by descent.  In gene families,
orthologs represent the equivalent family member across species.  This
is best confirmed by conserved syntenic relationships with surrounding
genes.  Paralogs are gene family members across species, not thought
to be orthologs.
