Genetics of Life History Variation in C. elegans
Applications are invited for a BBSRC studentship
to study the evolutionary
genetics of life history traits in the nematode
Caenorhabditis elegans. The project will be carried out
in the laboratory of Dr. Peter D. Keightley starting October 1996.
C. elegans is an attractive system for tackling fundamental
evolutionary issues.
Specific questions to be addressed are the magnitude of mutational
load, and the role of new mutations in
shaping patterns of variation for life history traits such as
life span and lifetime reproductive success and the relationships
between them.
The project will involve the
development of techniques
to measure major components of fitness and other quantitative
traits in the
laboratory.
ICAPB at the University of Edinburgh
is a leading centre for evolutionary and population genetics and
was rated 5 in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. Students have
a broad exposure to many disciplines and are offered an excellent programme of
support and training.
Applicants should have or expect to obtain a First or Upper Second Class
degree in Genetics or a related discipline, and have interests in
evolution and population genetics. Further information may
