Five Academic Appointments up to Chair Level
The School of Biological Sciences (rated 4 in RAE 96; grant income 1998
>£5.5M) was formed in 1996 through the merger of all of the biology
departments at Liverpool. The School, now the largest department in The
University, comprises 69 academic staff covering the full range of the
biological subdisciplines in a single research and teaching organisation.
It offers 12 Honours degrees to over 900 undergraduates, 5 MSc courses and
has over 190 postgraduate research students. See

A programme will commence shortly to accommodate the School in a new
Biosciences Centre. It is planned that the Centre will provide
state-of-the-art laboratories, a range of core facilities, a small business
incubator, and a 'Research Hotel'. The Centre will serve as the focus for
the Liverpool life sciences community which, with over 450 academic staff
and an annual research income of £15M, is one of the major UK bioscience
campuses. In this first phase of the strategy to develop the biosciences
at Liverpool, The University wishes to appoint exceptional candidates to a
range of positions in the School of Biological Sciences. An ability to
work within a strong interdisciplinary environment is an advantage since
exciting research developments are underway within the Science Faculty
(with Chemistry, Physics, Computer Sciences) and with the Faculties of
Medicine and Veterinary Sciences. The salaries for the professorial
appointments will be negotiable, and the salaries for all the Lectureships
will be within the range £17,238 - £30,065 pa.

PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENT IN BIOCHEMISTRY/MOLECULAR BIOLOGIST
Applications are invited for the prestigious Johnston Chair of
Biochemistry, which is the oldest Chair of Biochemistry in the UK. We are
seeking an outstanding individual with a strong research profile and
international reputation in any area of biochemistry or molecular biology,
although applications from those in the broad area of cell signalling are
particularly encouraged. Proven ability to fund and to direct a dynamic
research programme is essential. The successful candidate will provide
strong research leadership within the School and will participate in an
undergraduate teaching programme that reflects the current exciting

UP TO PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENT IN ZOOLOGY/ANIMAL SCIENCES
We wish to fill the recently vacated Chair in Zoology with an appointment
in animal science, which can be at any level up to and including Chair.
Candidates should have an outstanding research reputation, though more
junior candidates showing exceptional promise will also be considered.
Whilst no fields are excluded from consideration, preference may be given
to those using advanced molecular, transgenic or genomic approaches to
areas such as neuroscience, developmental or reproductive biology and
stress physiology. The successful candidate will also participate in our
undergraduate teaching programmes in Zoology and Animal Sciences with the

LECTURESHIP
The appointment may be made in any area that strengthens our current
research and teaching activities, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary
approaches. Preference may be given to candidates applying molecular
techniques to the genetic analysis of populations or to ecological
problems, although high quality applications from any field will be

LECTURESHIP IN EVOLUTIONARY PSYCHOLOGY
We are seeking applicants for this post within the broad area of
evolutionary psychology and behavioural ecology. The appointee will be
expected to initiate a research programme in this area, as well as
supporting teaching in the School's MSc in Evolutionary Psychology and
undergraduate programmes. The post is tenable for three years in the first
instance.

LECTURESHIP IN BIOINFORMATICS -JOINT APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF
COMPUTER SCIENCE
This post is intended to underpin a range of research and teaching
initiatives in the area of Bioinformatics. The successful applicant will
be expected to instigate an independent research programme that will act as
a focus for joint research opportunities between the School of Biological
Sciences and the Department of Computer Science. In addition, the
appointee will play a major role in the design and implementation of a new
MSc course in Biosystems and Informatics. The post is tenable for three
years in the first instance.

YOUNG RESEARCH GROUP LEADERS IN ANY AREA OF BIOLOGY
The new Biosciences Centre will provide exciting opportunities for young
research group leaders who wish to establish themselves at Liverpool. They
will have the opportunity to occupy new state-of-the-art laboratory suites
at the heart of a vigorous research community, close to a range of
excellent advanced technologies/core facilities. In the first instance,
qualified researchers will possess either their own fellowships or will
apply for fellowships from an appropriate funding body.
