The deadline for submitting abstracts for the 1999
International C.
elegans Meeting is approaching so I want to take this
opportunity to ask for
submission of abstracts that deal with the use of C. elegans
in teaching
(abstract deadline is March 18, 1999). Because this is the
first time that
teaching posters have been solicited, I ask that anyone
using C. elegans in any
aspect of teaching (lecture, lab, or other) consider making
a poster to maximize
exposure and dissemination of ideas at the meeting. Please
don't think that
your uses of C. elegans in teaching may be too simple to
share; your "simple"
idea may not have occurred to everyone! It looks like
teaching posters will be
grouped together in the abstract book and at the poster
session where they may
stay up for the length of the meeting (this has not yet been
finalized).
Submission of abstracts for teaching posters is the
same as submission of a research poster (see the Meeting web
site for details:
www.wisc.edu/union/info/conf/celegans/celegans.html). In
addition, to make
sure that all teaching posters are grouped together, please
send a short email
message to Susan Strome, Chair of the Organizing Committee,
(sstrome at bio.indiana.edu) with the title, authors, and a
note saying that this is a teaching poster.
The Society for Developmental Biology Meeting (June
13-17, 1999 at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville,
VA) will have
an Education Session where they would like to publicize
innovations in
undergraduate teaching. Thus, it should be possible for
those with teaching posters
at the C. elegans Meeting to get broader exposure of their
ideas at the SDB
Meeting. The abstract receipt deadline for the SDB Meeting
is March 12,
1999. Information on the meeting can be found at the SDB
web site
(sdb.bio.purdue.edu/SDBNews/Meetings.html). You can contact
Rich
Nuccitelli, Chair of the Education Committee, for more
information
(rlnuccitelli at ucdavis.edu). Thanks to Mary Montgomery of
Macalester
College for this tip!
Finally, a teaching workshop is being planned for the
C. elegans Meeting. I will send out more information on
this workshop
when the format has been finalized.
