A teaching workshop will be held at the 1999 C. elegans
Meeting on
Thurs. June 3 from 1-4 PM and will have two panel
discussions (to be held in
the Frederic March Play Circle from 1-3 PM) and a poster
session (to be held
from 3-4 PM).
PANEL DISCUSSION I (1-2 PM)
Strategies for working on research projects with
undergraduates.
This workshop should be of interest to faculty members
at both teaching
and research oriented institutions and those considering
academic careers.
Increasingly, faculty at all types of institutions are
encouraged/expected to
provide research experiences for undergraduates. For many
of us, research that
we conducted as undergraduates was our first real step into
science so we have
an obligation to provide that opportunity for current
undergraduates. There are
many things to consider when bringing a novice into the lab
and many
mistakes that can be made (and avoided!). The panelists
will share their ideas
on incorporating undergraduates into research.
Panelists:
Beth Bucher, University of Pennsylvania
Eleanor Maine, Syracuse University
Leilani Miller, Santa Clara University
Bruce Wightman, Muhlenberg College
PANEL DISCUSSION II (2-3 PM)
How to succeed as a faculty member at a predominantly
undergraduate
institution OR How to maintain an active research program
with a heavy
teaching/service load on a limited budget.
This workshop should be of interest to faculty members
at
predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUI) and those
considering a career
at a PUI. The challenges facing faculty members at PUIs are
substantially
different from those typically encountered at a research
university. This panel
will discuss some of these challenges and will touch on
topics such as budgets,
teaching loads, common mistakes tenure-track faculty make,
mentorship
programs, obtaining grant support, developing courses, etc.
The panelists are
all tenured faculty members at PUIs that have a variety of
teaching and
research expectations.
Panelists:
Beth DeStasio, Lawrence University
Phil Meneely, Haverford College
Joe Pelliccia, Bates College
Glenn White, Ashland University
POSTER SESSION (3-4 PM)
Eleven teaching posters (numbers 126-136) that describe
the use of C.
elegans in teaching will be up for the entire meeting. The
activities described
range from straightforward (e.g. use of primary literature
in class discussions)
to very sophisticated (e.g. immunofluorescence, RNAi,
lineage analysis, RT-
PCR and analysis of cDNA clones). Authors have been asked
to be at their
posters from 3-4 PM on Thurs. June 3.
