A Developmental Biology lecturer, temporary position is available for
one year starting 1st October 2000. A Leverhulme Trust Research
Fellowship award to Ian Hope will provide the salary for this
position which is to cover teaching responsibilities as detailed
below. The successful applicant would also be expected to pursue

JOB SUMMARY:
The position is funded by a Leverhulme Teaching Fellowship to Dr Ian
Hope. You should be an enthusiastic teacher, with a knowledge of C
elegans and an active researcher. Undergraduate teaching
responsibilities will include module management, a field trip,
practical classes, lectures, tutorials/pastoral supervision,
supervision of approx 4 final year projects. It is expected that you
will carry out research using facilities in the laboratory of Dr Hope
or another academic within the School of Biology
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST:
The post holder will be expected to maintain and enhance standards of
student attainment at undergraduate level. He/she will be required
to deliver and assess courses/modules and to undertake administrative
tasks associated with the teaching role in the School. In addition
the lecturer will be expected to provide pastoral advice and guidance
for undergraduates.
The major area of teaching in which the post holder will be involved
is that of Developmental Biology.
It is anticipated that applicants will have knowledge of C elegans
and have an interest in developing their teaching skills.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Applicants should be enthusiastic about developing their teaching
skills and have experience of Developmental Biology research which
will enable them to contribute to the developments in this area.
The post holder will possess good communication/presentation skills.
Good interpersonal and time management skills are essential as is
the capacity to enthuse students and work successfully as a member of
course teams.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in lecturing would be an advantage and preference will be
given to those who have demonstrable teaching skills and show ability
to present material in a scientific context.
EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL TRAINING:
A good first degree in a relevant discipline is essential and a PhD
is essential. Candidates should have computing skills and an
awareness of potential applications for teaching in information
technology.
