Teaching workshops/teaching posters/undergraduate dinner meeting at the 2003
International C. elegans Meeting
The C. elegans Teaching Workshop Committee (Phil Meneely, Haverford
College; Laura
Vallier, Hofstra University; Katie Walstrom, New College of South
Florida; Caroline
Goutte, Amherst College; Leilani Miller, Santa Clara University; Liz
Ryder, Worcester
Polytechnic Institute; John Scott, University of Hawaii at Hilo;
Becky Kohn, Ursinus
College; Jim Lissemore, John Carroll University) has organized three
teaching workshops,
a teaching poster session, and a dinner meeting for undergraduates for the 2003
International C. elegans Meeting. Please direct any questions about
the teaching
workshops and posters to Jim Lissemore (jlissemore at jcu.edu) and
please direct any
questions about the undergraduate dinner meeting to Caroline Goutte
(cegoutte at amherst.edu).

Undergraduate Dinner Meeting (Sun. June 29, 5-6:45 PM)
This informal meeting will provide a chance for undergraduates to meet other
undergraduates and for faculty members, post-docs, and graduate
students interested in
undergraduate education to meet one another. Tables will be reserved
at dinner before
the first plenary session on Sunday evening. The tables will be at
the De Neve Plaza
Commons (NOT at the Rieber Dining Facility) from 5:00 until about
6:45. Flyers will be
posted at registration and at the dining hall as reminders and the
tables will be
designated in some visible way (hopefully by helium balloons).
Contact Caroline Goutte
(cegoutte at amherst.edu) with questions.

Teaching Workshop I (Mon. June 30, 1-2 PM, Plaza Room)
"What is life like at a predominantly undergraduate (i.e. teaching)
institution and how
can I get a job at one?"
This workshop should be of interest to graduate students and postdocs
who are considering
a career at a predominantly undergraduate institution (PUI). The
challenges facing
faculty members at PUIs are substantially different from those
typically encountered at a
research university and the job search process is also quite
different. This panel will
discuss issues such as teaching loads, research expectations and
opportunities, how to
find PUI job openings, and hiring criteria at PUIs.
Workshop Chair: Beth DeStasio, Lawrence University
Panelists:
Caroline Goutte, Amherst College
Laura Vallier, Hofstra University
Katie Walstrom, New College of Florida
Jennifer Miskowski, University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse

Teaching Workshop II (Tues. July 1, 1-2 PM, Plaza Room)
"Using C. elegans in the classroom"
This workshop should be of interest to educators at all levels who
wish to use C. elegans
to illustrate important biological principles. The presenters at
this workshop will
demonstrate how C. elegans visual resources (e.g. movies, animations,
photographs),
databases, GFP-expressing strains, and other resources can be used in
courses at various
levels.
Workshop Chair: Jim Lissemore, John Carroll University
Presenters (please contact Jim Lissemore, jlissemore at jcu.edu, if you
would like to
present):
Jim Lissemore, John Carroll University
Daryl Hurd, St. John Fisher College
Jane Hubbard, New York University
John Scott, University of Hawaii at Hilo
Chris Li, Boston University
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Teaching Workshop III (Wed. July 2, 1-2 PM, Plaza Room)
"Maintaining a research program at a predominantly undergraduate
institution (PUI)"
This workshop should be of interest to faculty members at PUIs and
those considering a
career at a PUI. Faculty at most PUIs are encouraged/expected to
provide research
experiences for undergraduates and many PUIs require publications for
tenure and
promotion. The panelists will discuss issues such as conducting research with
undergraduates, mistakes to avoid, external and internal funding
sources, and grant
administration.
Workshop Chair: Becky Kohn, Ursinus College
Panelists:
Phil Meneely, Haverford College
Lynn Boyd, University of Alabama-Huntsville
Leilani Miller, Santa Clara University
John Scott, University of Hawaii at Hilo
