The Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) offers a unique opportunity for
students to experience marine science and other marine-related topics.
Located on 95-acre Appledore Island, Isles of Shoals in the Gulf of Maine,
this near-pristine environment allows students to study many aspects of
the intertidal and sub-tidal ecologies. The laboratory facilites on
island are complemented by the field capabilites of the SML-owned research
vessel, John M. Kingsbury.
SML's academic program includes over twenty credit courses for
undergraduates, graduates and professionals, several adult education
courses open to any interested persons, tours of Celia Thaxter's historic
garden and a program for high school juniors and seniors. Our academic
staff hail from academic institutions throughout the US and Canada as well
as professional
fields, where relevant. Our diverse course offerings include topics such
as introductory and advanced marine science courses, coastal law and
policy, geology, pollution, wetlands and underwater archaeology. Space is
still available in most courses.
