Colleagues,
The RV Thompson and the remotely operated vehicle ROPOS are currently on
station at the Juan de Fuca Ridge hydrothermal vent system in the
north-east Pacific performing exploration and experiments at various
hydrothermal vent sites, with an emphasis upon the biology of the
community. On board is also a party of K-14 teachers that are gaining
first hand knowledge of this kind of scientific pursuit. The entire
cruise is being documented live on the World Wide Web, including wonderful
pictures from ROPOS, with updates being fed by satellite every day. The
WWW page for this is at:
http://ocean.washington.edu/exploraquarium/revel/
but also see the day-by-day log at:
http://ocean.washington.edu/exploraquarium/revel/logbook/
Within the log-book, selecting any of the dive numbers (eg. HYS 349) will
take you to pages with full images from the submersible work.
Cheers!
