The Polar Marine Geosurvey Expedition is organising a cruise of RV "Academik
Alexandr Karpinsky" to the Southern Ocean in early 1997 (January - April).
It is intended to carry out research in the basin of the Risser-Larsen Sea
and on Hunnerus Ridge, 66-69 S and 25-33 E. This area is situated within
the GEOMOD Geotravers. The aims of the expedition are to investigate the
structure of the basin basement and of the transition zone "continent-ocean"
and to determine the stratification of the basin sedimentary cover. Methods
to be used are: water receptive (hydrophilic) seismic survey by means of
reflected waves, seismic sounding, gravimetry, magnetic measurements. The
duration of the cruise will be 120 days. Participation of interested
foreign specialists is invited. The ship will also carry out some research
activities in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans during the passage from St.
Petersburg to the Risser-Larsen Sea. Embarkation is possible at either St.
Petersburg or Capetown.
