Workshop on Exploring the Deep Sub Seafloor Biosphere
AN EMAPS & MAST WORKSHOP 2-4 JULY, 1997 AT BRISTOL, UK
Recent research conducted within the International Ocean Drilling
Program (ODP) has demonstrated that bacteria are present much
deeper in marine sediments than was previously thought possible.
These discoveries have changed our perception of marine sediments
and indicate the presence of a largely unexplored deep bacterial
biosphere that may even rival the Earth's surface biosphere, in terms of
size and diversity ! This discovery has widespread fundamental
significance and great potential applied relevance e.g. oil and gas
exploitation and as source of unique bacteria for potential
biotechnological application.
This worksop will provide a forum :
a) for discussing the most recent deep biosphere research.
b) to stimulate interdisciplinary interest in this new researcharea.
c) to explore with representatives from industry the potential
application of deep bacterial processes.
d) to decide key research objectives and how these can beachieved
e) to produce a European Strategy for developing and exploiting research
in the Deep Marine Biosphere.
