MODERATOR'S NOTE: CROSS-POSTED FROM CRUST-L

Dear All,

I'm trying to put together a proposal to study the lamina & medulla of deepsea
Decapoda/Arthropoda - the assumption being that species from the aphotic zone
with simple eyes (e.g. Hymenadora, Rimicaris, Pontophilus) which live in a
pretty simple visual environment will have simplified networks which may
provide a benchmark for the study of species with more a complex structure.

At the moment I'm thinking of using golgi staining and more modern techniques
to identify individual components and perhaps cytochrome C (or some other
metabolic stain) after stimulation to identify layers which process different
stimuli. I'd hope to get enough information from the histology to attempt to
create model using a neural network.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Best wishes, Magnus
