9 months post-doctoral position in Marine Geology / Geophysics
A 9 months post-doctoral position is available to work with Mathilde Cannat
and Celine Rommevaux at the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris,
=46rance) on the results of a cruise scheduled in mid-May to mid-June 1998 t=
o
the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The post is only open to citizens of countries of
the European Community, with the exception of France! It is based in Paris
and will start in March or April 1998. The pay is appropriate for a
newly-graduated PhD.
We are looking for someone with skills in the processing of marine
bathymetric, gravimetry and/or magnetic data, interested in using these
skills to participate in the preparation and processing of the results of
the SudAcores cruise to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Within this framework, the
exact objectives of the job are not determined yet and will largely depend
on the skills and research interests of the successfull candidate. The
SudAcores cruise will address the influence of the Azores hot spot on the
Mid-Atlantic Ridge and consist in a multibeam bathymetry, reflectivity (a
proposal has been sent to NSF for use of the HMR1 sonar system),
gravimetry, magnetism and single channel seismics survey, with a few
dredges (10). The study area is located between 34=B0 et 38=B0N south of the
Azores platform. It includes the axis and extends off-axis up to 10-13
myrs. The objectives of the cruise are : 1) to bring constraints on the
relative proportion of ultramafic versus magmatic rocks in the crust of the
study area; 2) to study the evolution of axial segmentation patterns, of
seafloor morphology, and of the magnetic and gravimetric signature of the
crust over the last 10-13 myrs; and 3) to bring constraints on the
frequency and geographic distribution of magmatic pulses that have come
>from the Azores hot spot to the ridge axis during this time period.
Researchers involved in the proposal come from IPGP, Universit=E9 de Paris
VI, Universit=E9 de Brest, GRGS Toulouse, IOS (UK), Durham University (UK),
Woods Hole (USA) and the Hawaii HMR1 group (USA) .
If you are interested, please send a cv and a short statement to Mathilde
Cannat (mac at ccr.jussieu.fr)
We aim to make the appointment as soon as possible, so do not hesitate.
