The deep sea creatures being recently discovered in the last twenty
or so years have always been fascinating to me. on a research cruise a
few months back we had the opportunity to examine a net full of deep sea
fish. This was off the coast of Monterey, point sur specifically. The
net went down a couple of thousand feet and came back with many animals
but in particular a very interesting looking fish. This fish was
probably five to six inches long and black. He had no prominent fins and
almost smooth skin. Starting from his large eye and traveling down the
side of the body were spots about the size of a quarter that were
irredescent blue, catching the light as some bird feathers and butterfly
wings do. I never caught the name of this fish and I was wondering if
anyone knew anything about this. I understand this is a pretty vague
description but suggestions could help with further research. We took
some photos but I never saw them later.
Also, I was wondering if anyone had any information about the beautiful
vampire squid. Any new information about why it behaves in such a way as
twisting and turning inside out would be helpful. Thanks,
                                                      Marylou
