The Office of Naval Research is sponsoring a colloquia series entitled "Oceanographic Greats: Innovation and Inspiration of 20th Century Oceanography." Coordinated by The H. John Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment, the series is being co-chaired by Dr. Arthur Nowell, University of Washington, and Dr. Robert Gagosian, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The colloquia series, a follow up to the 1998 Year of the Ocean, will assemble the senior scientists and researchers who laid the foundation of modern oceanography. The series offers a unique opportunity for participants to learn about the genesis of the field directly from those who created the science. The colloquia will be held at major centers of oceanographic education throughout 1999 and will culminate in a gala held in Washington, D.C. at the end of the year.
