A starter course in molecular genetics for traditional=20
taxonomists

A new Centre for Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology=20
(CMBB) has been set up at Heriot-Watt University in=20
Edinburgh, Scotland. Its purpose is to establish a unit for=20
molecular genetic analysis of marine organisms that could=20
be applied to taxonomic problems, monitoring marine=20
pollution and biotechnical exploitation of naturally=20
occurring substances.

The CMBB is offering a 3-day course aimed at people who are=20
engaged in taxonomic work but who are not familiar with=20
techniques in molecular systematics. Participants need not=20
have previous knowledge of the subject as the course will=20
provide both a basic theoretical grounding together with=20
instruction in practical techniques.=20

The course is aimed at anyone who needs to extend their=20
taxonomic capability beyond traditional morphological and=20
anatomical approaches. These include taxonomists working=20
in:

Museums=20
Water authorities
Government Laboratories
Consultancies and analytical laboratories
Research Institutes
Universities

The course will run from Monday 19th to Wednesday 21st=20
March, with a Reception on Sunday 18th. The cost are: =20
Tuition and Bench Fees - =A3200; Accommodation and meals (3=20
nights) =A3120; Additional nights (B&B only) =A336/night.

Closing date for registration is 16th February. If anyone=20
is interested in attending this course and would like=20
further information and a Registration Form, please contact=20
me e-mail me at the e-mail address below.
