The Oceans 2001 conference will be held during the month of November in
Honolulu. The Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) is one of the
organizers and being HURL's program biologist, I have been asked to set up
a deepwater fisheries session which will be part of the marine resources
topic area. The format will be similar to many other conferences with
2-hour time blocks each consisting of five 20-min presentations including
questions and answers. A 300 to 500 word abstract is due on March 30,
2001. However, because of the late decision to include this session, those
of you who need more time can submit your abstracts after that date (but
not too much later).
In addition to the abstract, a camera-ready 2 to 6 page paper is due
August, 15, 2001. The format is double-column, 10 pt font. There are no
restrictions to publishing the same paper in a refereed journal. No chairs
have been assigned to any of the time blocks since I won't know how many
blocks will be needed until we receive all of the abstracts at the end of
the month. However, I am now taking the names of those of you who would
like to perform that function. Potential topics under which presentations
will be grouped include acoustic surveys, direct counts, tagging and
movement patterns, habitat characterization, reserves, as well as any other
area where there are at least several submissions.
For complete information on the conference, please visit the website at
www.oceans2001.com. Don't be alarmed if you don't see this session listed
yet since the decision to include it is quite recent. Furthermore, it is
unlikely that I will be able to reach all who might be interested in
attending, so please share this message throughout your respective agencies
and with anyone else you can think of. With over 2000 scientists expected
to attend and with presentations on all types of ocean research, it should
be a very exciting week in beautiful Hawaii.
Aloha,
Chris
