I'm writing to invite you and your colleagues to dive into our latest
"virtual" expedition -- "Extreme 2001: A Deep-Sea Odyssey!" Currently,
classrooms and the public across the United States and in several other
countries are following along as a research team led by University of
Delaware marine biologist Craig Cary explores hydrothermal vent sites
deep in the Pacific Ocean. The scientists are working aboard Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution's R/V ATLANTIS and submersible ALVIN at the
9=B0N site, along the East Pacific Rise, some 1,200 miles off Costa =
Rica.
The classroom component of the project includes a printed resource
guide, curriculum activities, a video produced in partnership with
Public Broadcasting Station station WHYY-TV, and an interactive Web site
(http://www.ocean.udel.edu/extreme2001). The Web site includes
information about the mission and crew, seafloor geology, creature
features, and high-tech tools, as well as interviews, journals, dive
logs, and other "neat stuff" supplied daily by our shipboard
correspondents at sea. We are also hosting a "Write the Scientists"
feature on the Web site, highlighting a 3-D Pompeii worm (the hottest
animal on the planet), and offering a virtual tour of the seafloor
aboard the submersible Alvin.=20
My office at the University of Delaware developed the Extreme 2000
educational project in January 2000. You were very kind to share that
information with your colleagues. We're now back with "Extreme 2001: A
Deep-Sea Odyssey," and I wondered if you might consider sharing it also
with your deep-sea research list.=20
