An unidentified beaked whale stranded in Kagoshima

LATEST UPDATE (2002.10.03)

Preparation of the skull of the 6.5 m beaked whale found stranded in
Kagoshima-ken (Prefecture) on the 26th of July is completed. Tentative
identification based on skull morphology is described here.

Locality: Nishikata beach, Sendai-shi (City), Kagoshima-ken (Prefecture)
Species: Unidentified Ziphiid (possibly of genus Mesoplodon), Female, BL; ca
6.5m

Result

Based on skull morphology the whale in question is identified as Longman's
beaked whale.

Does anyone know if this might be responsible for reports of the
unclassified "Species A"?
