Juvenile giant squids caught for the first time ever
An international expedition team has succeeded in capturing a living
juvenile giant squid for the first time.
The expedition led by marine biologist Dr Steve O'Shea captured seven
creatures off the coast of New Zealand.
Until now all knowledge of them had been from legend.
The Vikings thought specimens brought up in fishing nets or washed ashore
were sea monsters reports The New Zealand Herald.
The capture of the seven squid and attempts to keep them have been filmed by
The Discovery Channel.
Despite attempts to simulate the squids environment as closely as possible
to reduce stress, they did not survive. In the wild the squid grow to over
12 metres. The juveniles which were caught measured a miniscule 9mm to 13mm.
Although they exist in all of the world's oceans, the largest concentration
is thought to be in the southern hemisphere near New Zealand.
Dr O'Shea has gained valuable knowledge about keeping the giant squid alive,
creating hope that one day he will be able to raise them to adults.
