Although the vent fluids can reach 350° C, the thermal gradient is very steep across
a hydrothermal vent chimney wall. It can drop from 350° to the ambient temperature
of about 2° C. Scientists have discovered many microorganisms and invertebrates
in these hydrothermal ecosystems, but none lives directly in the vent fluids.
