Hello all,
I am receiving a lot of non deep-sea scientist at my recent website. I
was thinking about posting a series of post with the general heading of
25 things you should know about the deep sea. Any thoughts about what
they would be? Of course as each one was posted they would be
accompanied with more of an explanation. A few ideas
1. The deep sea is the earth’s largest habitat.
2. The deep sea starts at the edge of the continental shelf and ranges
in depths from...
3. Processes and patterns in the deep sea are intimately coupled to
surface processes and patterns
4. High species diversity
5. Most species are smaller than their shallow water counterparts
except some crustaceans that are larger
6. The deep sea contains a variety of unique (habitats-seamounts,
vents, etc.)
7. The deep sea is currently under threat by fishing, drilling, mining,
and waste disposal
8. Deep-sea organisms exhibit a wide array of adaptations to the
extremes of pressure, temperature, and low food availability.
