Global Vision International is seeking expedition members with diving
skills and knowledge of marine life to participate in scuba diving
surveys and marine conservation projects in Mexico.
Expedition members are needed for periods of 5, 10 and 15 weeks to join
the GVI marine research teams. Please promote these opportunities to
your clients - it's an excellent way of diving more and doing something
worthwhile at the same time. Additional training is available if
required, up to PADI Divemaster. Activities include coral reef and fish
monitoring surveys, turtle research, and environmental education and
awareness programs. There is a free careers abroad field work placement
and job vacancy service for former expedition members.
Mexico
GVI has been working in Mexico since 2003, and currently runs 2 marine
expeditions in Mexico, both involved in the conservation of the
Mesoamerican barrier reef and collected data is now being used by GVI
and its partners to promote the management of the reserve's resources in
a more sustainable manner.
Expedition Members are thoroughly trained in fish, coral and algae
identification techniques, as well as in the application of the
Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System Synoptic Monitoring Program
methodology. The data collected by the Expedition Members supports this
regional initiative, which aims to increase the biological knowledge of
the World's 2nd largest Barrier Reef System and to manage this system
both from a local and regional perspective. Since the beginning, and
with the assistance of our partners, GVI have amassed one of the largest
databases in existence on the condition, health and changes of any
section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.
GVI Mexico also collaborates with, and provides Expedition Members for
other local projects, such as turtle species in-water observations and
beach patrols during nesting season, crocodile monitoring, and bird
observation and tagging. A long-term environmental education and
awareness program is also carried out in the nearby towns and villages.
Expedition Members will obtain the necessary skills to partake in these
projects.
All Expedition Members are trained to a minimum to PADI Advance Open
Water level, with further training available up to PADI Divemaster.
Special emphasis is placed in underwater navigation and peak performance
buoyancy skills when training the Expedition Members, as these are key
skills in order to carry out underwater biological surveys.
Expedition Members also have the opportunity to complete the PADI Coral
Reef Researcher Speciality, course that covers in-water species
identification and application of survey methodologies. In addition,
Expedition Members are introduced to the use of marine radios and
communications, Oxygen use and delivery, 1st aid and CPR, and dive
equipment maintenance.
The expeditions support the efforts of GVI's award winning local
partners to increase the long-term sustainable use of the coastal and
marine resources of the Mexican Caribbean. GVI Mexico partners include:
