POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN DESERT ECOSYSTEM ECOLOGY

Position Description:
This is a research position to study the effects of elevated carbon dioxide
on an intact desert ecosystem using FACE (Free-Air CO2 Enrichment)
technology . The essential functions will be to work with a team of
scientists from the University of Nevada-Reno, University of Nevada-Las
Vegas, and the Desert Research Institute to examine changes in the
productivity, carbon and nutrient cycling, water balance and community
dynamics of the Mojave Desert ecosystem in response to simulated global
change.
Required: A Ph.D. in an area of ecology, soil science, or plant physiology
with a strong background in at least two of the following areas: (1)
Ecology of Arid-Lands; (2) Ecosystem nutrient cycling; (3) Plant or
ecosystem gas-exchange; (4) Ecosystem water balance; (5) Plant-soil
interactions; (6) Plant-herbivore interactions; or (7) Biology of
cryptogamic crusts.
The successful candidate must also demonstrate strong interpersonal and
communication skills, the ability to function as part of a team, and the
ability to conduct research with minimal supervision under severe physical
conditions. Additionally, applicants should be extremely motivated to
conduct and publish their own independent ecological research. Evidence of
the ability to publish scientific articles is required.
The successful candidate must be able to begin work by 1 March 1997.
The research site is located on the Department of Energy's Nevada Test
Site. The successful candidate must be willing to apply for and obtain a
DOE unclassified security clearance (UC) in order to work at the site.
Salary and Benefits: Salary $28,000 to $30,000 annually depending on
qualifications and experience. DRI offers an excellent benefits package.
