First Announcement and Call for Papers
Canopy Dynamics and Forest Management - A Missing Link?
Joint workshop organised by the IUFRO working groups for
"Canopy Processes" (2.01.12) and "Whole Plant Physiology" (2.01.15)
August 1-11, 1999, in Estonia, Finland and Sweden
Background
==========
Canopies of tree stands, and ultimately tree crowns
interface tree populations, soil and the atmosphere to
intercept radiation and to produce dry matter in forest
ecosystems. Canopy dynamics is a key to
understanding how environmental conditions affect the
productivity of forest ecosystems, and it also provides
means by which the forest ecosystem can produce
timber and other items and services needed in the
human society. The links between the canopy dynamics
and management are still poorly known, and they are
thus only partially utilised in shaping the sustainable
management of forest ecosystems and forests.
Objectives of the Workshop
==========================
- To promote our understanding of how the
structure and dynamics of canopies affect the
productivity of forest ecosystems.
- To analyse how the structure and dynamics of
forest canopies affect the processes of CO2 and
H2O exchange in terms of whole tree physiology,
with implications for the productivity of the forest
ecosystems.
- To demonstrate the potentials of remote sensing
and GIS techniques for estimating the structure
and dynamics of forest canopies, with implication
for productivity on varying spatial and temporal
scales.
- To promote our understanding of how canopy
processes can be efficiently used to shape
management of forest ecosystems on a
sustainable basis.
Who Should Attend
=================
Forest research scientists, forest ecosystem modellers,
foresters, micrometeorologists, members of the remote
sensing research and application community, members
of the global change and terrestrial ecosystem research
community.
Venue
=====
Session 1 of the workshop will convene in Estonia
(August 1 - 4, 1999) with its focus on canopy structure
with its implications for the productivity of the forest
ecosystem. We will then fly to Finland, where Session 2,
on whole tree physiology and climate change impacts on
the productivity of the forest ecosystem, with
management implications, will be held (August 5 - 7,
1999). From Finland we will fly to Sweden, where
Session 3 will be held, with its focus on the nutrient
constraints on productivity and the use of ecophysiology
in forest management (August 8 -11, 1999).
