We apologize for the recent problems with NCBI's FTP service. On May
11th, we suffered a catastrophic hardware failure in the storage array
that holds the FTP data. Our initial priority was to restore the data
from backups and make it available again. Once that was done, however,
we discovered other hardware issues with the FTP server. Because of
that, we have accelerated plans to deploy a more scalable FTP
solution.

That solution is now in place. We are merely waiting for the necessary
DNS changes to propagate; once this has happened, we believe that
normal levels of FTP access should be restored. In the meantime, if
you have unacceptable performance from <ftp.ncbi.nih.gov>, please try
accessing <ftp1.ncbi.nih.gov> or <ftp2.ncbi.nih.gov>.

DO NOT use those latter two addresses in production scripts. THEY ARE
UNSTABLE AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE. We are making you aware
of them only in an attempt to resolve the current situation a bit more
quickly than DNS propagation allows for.

Thank you for your patience,
the NCBI systems staff
