As of Friday evening, May 24, at 8:00 PM Pacific,
we are unable to conduct an ftp session with
ftp.ncbi.nih.gov. Nor can we run a process using
the alternate addresses, ftp2.ncbi.nih.gov and
ftp1.ncbi.nih.gov. Our ftp clients are able to
connect and login, so it is not a DNS problem,
but the sessions are then completely unresponsive.
Here is the full extent of a session using NcFTP
from Solaris command line:
haldane# ncftp -r ftp1.ncbi.nih.gov:genbank/daily/gpcu.fsa.gz
Error: Host is not responding to commands, hanging up.
Error: Remote host has closed the connection.

Here's another example using the Solaris ftp client. After
several minutes on non-response, we give up and interrupt.
The "Warning Notice!" line is all we get -- the rest of that
message is not transmitted:
haldane# ftp ftp2.ncbi.nih.gov
Connected to ftp2.ncbi.nih.gov.

We will try again during the weekend. However, we just checked
the bio-mirror.net site and they also have not been able to update
their files yet. Their most recent "daily" is still
a May 10 file, as we reported five days ago.
