Dear Ian,

Here's the method I use.

Preparation of glucose oligomer mixture by partial acid hydrolysate of
dextran with HCl.

To 300mg of freeze-dried dextran (Mr 250,000 from Sigma or equivalent
previously dialysed exhaustively against water) add 3ml 0.1M HCl. Hydrolyse
for 6 hours at 100°C. Cool and pass the hydrolysate through Dowex AG50 and
AG3 resins and filter. Dilute to 50mg/ml. Do a test run on your separation
of choice. The length of the hydrolysis time can be lengthened or shortened
to give the desired level of hydrolysis.

Alternatively, Oxford GlycoSciences sell a "Glucose Homopolymer Standard"
Cat. No. I-4503, 15 mg for 66 pounds.
