I think it would be desirable to have abstracting/indexing of articles posted
to moderated groups as a means of increasing the visibility of those papers to
the worldwide community of scientists, not all of whom may routinely read
usenet groups. I have looked at the archived articles from this newsgroup (as
a test case) on the IUBIO gopher server, and found that they are listed by a
number that does not correspond to either the number that appears next to the
article on my newsreader, nor to the message ID number in the header. If some
consistent means of archiving can be found, as Don suggests, one obstacle will
be overcome. Getting people to submit papers and making readers aware of the new
resource are still important goals, however.
