Canadian Institutes for Health Research

It is paramount that we send letters or faxes to the Prime Minister's
Office and to Mr. Paul Martin, today or tomorrow. We understand that
the Cabinet, during its budgetary process is seriously considering
funding the CANADIAN INSTITUTES FOR HEALTH RESEARCH. However, they
need to know that there is widespread support for this.

Would you consider sending a letter today (addresses below)? We need
to urge Mr. Chretien and Mr. Martin to:

- Proceed with the establishment of the Canadian Institutes for
  Health Research.
- Ensure that the funding is adequate. Almost certainly this
means that by the third year that at least $300 Million is
allocataed. Otherwise, there are major concerns that the
launch of this program will be jeopardized by inadequate
  funding.
- Remind the Prime Minister and Mr. Martin of the increase in
health research funding occurring in the U.S. which is already
threatening health research in Canada and particularly in
Manitoba. Almost 2 billion dollars a year of increased health
research funding will be available during each of the next
four years in the U.S. if they follow their current budget
plan. Retaining and recruiting to health research in Canada
will become increasingly problematic if we do not establish
  CIHR.
- The CIHR will also serve to increase productivity in Canada
by addressing health issues, create jobs, create
opportunities and improve our health care system.
- Health research has the support of the majority of the
Canadian population and many individuals see this as a
higher priority than health care expenditures.

Thank you for getting on board. We need your support at this time.

We would like copies of your letters sent to the Research Office so
we can see what has gone out from here.

Yours sincerely,

Allan Ronald, MD
