I am researching a paper on the future of scientific publishing, and I
am overwhelmed by the amount of data out there. I think I am missing
the forest for the trees! Anyway, there seems to be a lot of talk
about open-access and journals like PLoS with the hope that scientific
publishing can be free to all. Math and Physics have had the
xxx-archive for about 10 years. Has this archive resulted in the loss
of any Math or Physics journals? According to what I can discern, it
has not. If this si true, then after 10 years, the xxx archive has had
little effect thus far on "traditional" publishing. I know it is
impossible to guess the future, but are there any trends or parallels
with electronic publishing thus fas that will serve as a model for
what may happen in the future?
Anyone who cares to share any insights or thoughts, I would greatly
appreciate it.
