France's Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS)

is perhaps the world's largest national research institute, covering
virtually all scientific and scholarly disciplines, in a distributed
network of individual research units as well as university-associated
units all over France.
CNRS was a delegate to the recent Berlin 3 meeting in Southampton UK

whose objective was to formulate a concrete institutional policy that
could be implemented by the 55 institutions worldwide

that have already signed the Berlin Declaration for Open Access

(as well as all new signatories).
The outcome of Berlin 3 was the following recommended institutional
policy:

CNRS has now registered its commitment to implementing a CNRS
institutional self-archiving policy along the lines recommended:

The importance of this national institutional commitment cannot
be under-emphasized. CNRS is setting an example for the research
institutions and universities of the world.
Research institutions and universities (both those who have already
signed the Berlin Declaration and those who have not) are now invited
to register their commitment to adopting institutional self-archiving
policies of their own, along the lines recommended by the Berlin
Declaration at:
